Walter A. Newlin 1891-1971
The Casey area was saddened by the death of one of its most prominent and respected citizens, Walter A. Newlin, 80, who passed away in his sleep early Sunday morning at his residence. Mr. Newlin was born February 1, 1891 on a farm near Annapolis, the son of John and Laura Lamb Newlin. He was united in marriage to Gladys Pierce on June 7, 1923 at Greencastle, Ind.
Mr. Newlin, graduate of University of Illinois, was agriculture teacher in Casey High School from 1920 to 1948. It was during this time that he made so many contributions to the agriculture community not only in this area, but other areas as they soon copied his programs and methods, thus earning his
title "the Father of Illinois Agriculture" as he was called by the Illinois College of Agriculture at the University of Illinois. He was past president of the Casey Rotary Club; a 50 year member of the Eaton Masonic Lodge; a member of the United Methodist Church, and a veteran of World War One.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Charlotte) Goble of Casey; two sons, Robert of Pagosa Springs, Colo., and Allen of Paris; a sister, Miss Alice Newlin, Annapolis, and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in Markwell Funeral Home with Rev. Harvey Dibrell officiating and burial in the Casey Washington Street Cemetery.
Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. today at the funeral home.
