Robert R. Swittenberg

Robert R. “Bob” Swittenberg, 75, retired Executive Vice President, Trustmark National Bank, of Jackson, died Wednesday, November 27 at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, November 29 at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home with burial at Lakewood Memorial Park Cemetery in Jackson.

Mr. Swittenberg, a native of Lexington, graduated from the University of Mississippi where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He also graduated from the School of Banking of the South at LSU and was an instructor at the American Institute of Banking, Mississippi School of Banking at Ole Miss and the School of Banking of the South at LSU.

He joined Capital National Bank (now Trustmark National Bank) in 1937. He served in the U. S. Army in Africa and Italy during World War II and was awarded the Legion of Merit. Following the war, he returned to his banking career and over his 48 years at Trustmark he held many positions of responsibility both at the bank and in Mississippi banking circles.

During his lifetime he held leadership positions in numerous civic and cultural organizations. He was president of Goodwill Industries, Jackson Boys’ Clubs, Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, United Way, Chairman of State 4-H Council, and a director of the Andrew Jackson Council of Boy Scouts, Hinds County Chapter of American Red Cross, Jackson Chamber of Commerce, Family Services Association, Downtown Jackson Association, and Keep Jackson Beautiful.

Mr. Swittenberg was the recipient of the Greater Jackson Advertising Club Silver Medal Award.

He was a member of Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Sharp Swittenberg, and three cousins, Emma Dennis Coleman, Greenwood; Juanita P. Watson, Lexington; and Betty Lebby, Lexington.
