Had 8th grade education.
Was a blacksmith, farmer, water witcher, carpenter and all round builder.
He and his wife built their first house, a log cabin, on 60 acres of land 3.5 miles East of Weaubleau, Mo. on highway 54. They cut trees on north side of land and pulled them to the road on the south side where they erectecd a 3 room cabin. Andy and his father Calvin built a house 2 years later near the same location.
Worked for the Frisco RR to earn enough money to purchase the above land.
Always whistled. You could locate him by listening.
Built and repaired everything he owned.
Loved to hunt and fish.
Was a pretty good "vet" and castrated most of the hogs, cattle, and horses in Hickory County for others.
Raised sheep and hogs.
Wanted 100% wool socks during WW2 and no wool socks were available, so sheared his sheep, found a spinning wheel in a sale, had a neighbor teach him how to spin yarn and knit, and made his own socks!
Hated store bought bread and would not let it in the house.
A very stubborn man, a very practical man, a very smart man with little formal education, and a very nice man.
Died of prostrate cancer in Springfield, Mo. hospital.
