Mark quietly and comfortably lost his courageous battle with colon cancer at 9PM on Friday, October 13, 2006.
Mark was the second of five children to Herman and Helen Klauk. He was born in Erie and brought up as a child on 18 acres of farm and woods in the Belle Valley area of Millcreek Township, just south of Erie. He was graduated from McDowell High School in 1964 and from Gannon University in 1968. After a short period of time in the Peace Corps in Venezuela, Mark returned to the United States and settled in the New England area. It was here that he met the mother of his first two children (Ryan and Erin), Vareen.
Mark and Vareen met in 1971 working together at Mclean Hospital in Belmont MA and married on May 19, 1973. They moved together to NYC where he attended Columbia University and Vareen worked at Mt Sinai Medical Center. They had wonderful times and a lot of fun living in the city and also spent many happy times with his grandmother "Bam" and Auntie Helen both in New York and at the Jolly Folly in eastern PA. Mark received a graduate degree (MSW) from Columbia University. They returned to Mass in 1975 in great excitement to await Ryan's birth in November of that year. They bought their first home in Marlboro Mass. Erin, his only daughter, was born in 1978. They loved their babies dearly but, sadly the marriage ended in 1981. After a period of readjustment Mark and Vareen were able to maintain a relationship, first for the children and later out of mutual respect, shared parenting and finally genuine caring for one another that lasted until his death. In later years Mark spent holidays with Vareen and her family, often remarking that her parents were his favorite in-laws and that he loved the commotion of holidays with the kids and all the relatives! In the end, Vareen was instrumental in arranging for his care at Mass General Hospital where he received the best care possible for his disease, and even for awhile, hope that he might beat it. Vareen spoke at his memorial service quoting an Elizabeth Barrett Browning sonnet: "Go from me-yet I shall stand henceforward in thy shadow". Mark's presence in Vareen's life cast a shadow but she commented that the other side of shadow is light and she is grateful that their children will light her life forever.
Mark met and married the mother of his third child (Andrew), Maryellen, in the early 1980's. They were married June 21, 1985, and settled in Hudson, Mass. Andrew was born in August 1986. Mark's marriage to Maryellen ended in 1999.
In the early 2000's, Mark met Debra. They were married on February 14, 2004.
Mark had a private clinical social worker practice in Stow, MA. For many years a resident of Hudson, MA, Mark most recently has resided in Newton, NH. He was also a fitness instructor at The Thoreau Club, Concord, MA, and the Global Fitness Club, Stow, MA.
Private Services and cremation were held on Tuesday, October 17th, at the Cremation Society of NH.
Mark is survived by his parents, three brothers and a sister, his wife, a stepdaughter, two sons, a daughter, his children's mothers, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
