Shelton went to California with his brother Clinton C. Davis. They lived near their cousin Mayberry Davis, Jr., the son of Haywood Davis; their father’s brother. In the 1870 US Federal Census of Colusa County, Butte Township, it shows that the brothers worked as laborers while living at the Onaiz James home as boarders. Shelton would have been about 28 years old at his death. According to the coroner’s report, he died while hunting and accidentally shooting himself.
There is no record of Shelton ever marrying. Sadly, his brother Clinton returned to Illinois to be married himself, just six weeks before Shelton died.
Shelton's headstone states that he died in 1877. However, this is in error, as the Colusa County, California newspaper report the incident happened on the 19th of Novenber 1874.
It was by mere chance that this writer and descendant (Maureen Davis) located the headstone for Shelton in 2010. After visiting the Marvin Chapel Cemetery, the Davis family was driving through Colusa and Butte counties and came upon a small cemetery near Princeton. After stopping and walking through the grounds, this white marble headstone stood in a row of markers, none of which looked like it ... it seemed out-of-place. After studying the headstone and the name Shelton, it was a pleasant surprise that this long lost headstone was now found! Rest in peace, Shelton Davis.
