Another Yesterday

Phillip Allgood, aged seventy-three years living one mile and a half south of Bainbridge, feel dead yesterday at three o’clock. With George W. Flint he was cutting wood and they were on opposite sides of a tree. Flint had been talking to him and receiving no answer for several minutes went in search of his companion. He found Allgood lying on the ground lifeless, and limp. Flint went to town immediately and gave the alarm and friends went after the remains.

Coroner McNeff was telegraphed for and drove up last evening, returning this morning. He examined no one but Flint, and will make a finding that the death was caused probably by heart disease. Dr. G. W. Farver’s certificate states that he never knew Allgood to have any heart trouble.

HIS HEART STOPPED.

While cutting wood Phillip Allgood, a
Good Citizen, Dies Without a Moment’s Warning.

The following account of a sad occurrence at Bainbridge is from our special correspondent at the place:

A gloom was cast over our town on Tuesday afternoon by the sudden death of Phillip Allgood, one of our oldest and well respected citizens. He had gone a short distance from town to John Randall’s farm to cut wood in company with George Flint. The two men had been at work some two hours when Mr. Allgood retired a few rods from the place where they were laboring; Mr. Flint continued at his work until his partner’s prolonged absence excited his curiosity to learn the cause of the old man’s staying longer than usual from his work, so he went in search of him and found him lying at the root of a tree wrapped in the arms of death. He had not complained of being sick – the writer saw and conversed with him about three hours before, and he appeared to be as well as common, and very cheerful. It is now reported that he was predisposed to heart trouble, and that is the probable cause of his death. He was about sixty-nine years of age, of industrious habits and honorable in all his dealings. He was not a man of great pretensions, but you could always know where to find “Uncle Phillip.” He leaves an aged wife, two sons and one daughter to mourn his sudden demise.
