RICHARD F. SILBERSTEIN Richard passed away on Thursday, July 27, 2006, at the age of 88. He was born on July 7, 1918, in Sacramento, California to Max and Daisy Silberstein. He lived in Sacramento for 20 years until leaving for Pasadena, California to attend California Institute of Technology. Richard graduated from Sacramento High School in 1936 and Sacramento Junior College in 1938. He graduated from Cal Tech with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering in 1941 and a Master of Science Degree in Civil Engineering in 1942. After graduation, Richard joined the U.S. Army and served as a civil engineer during WWII in both Europe and the Pacific. After being discharged from the Army in 1945, he returned to Sacramento where he began his professional career as a civil engineer. He worked as a civil engineer in Sacramento until he and his wife Vera moved to Fresno. In 1971, Richard was one of four co-founders that established Structcon, a civil engineering firm located in Fresno. He was active in the business until his retirement in 1997. Although retired from the firm, he continued to go to Structcon every weekday until his passing. He derived a great deal of pleasure in being around his co-workers at the firm. Rich was an avid reader and enjoyed playing cards every Friday night for the last 20 years with his friends. He was especially proud to have been a member of the Fresno Lion's Club for 49 years. Rich was a quiet individual and very caring to those close to him. He will be missed by those who had the privilege of knowing him. Richard is survived by his wife Vera of Fresno; his sister-in-law, Betty Bianchi of Cathedral City; his nephews, Kurt Silberstein, Eric Silberstein, and Robert Bianchi; and his niece, Karen Machlan.
