Billie Gale was the youngest of three children born to Flora Lee Edwards and her husband, George Houston Reed, Jr. at their farm close to San Antonio, Texas.

Flora was my Grandma Cora's twin sister. Billie Gale was born the same month and year as my Aunt Opal; her sister Georgene the same year as my father, and her oldest sister Evelyn, was the age of my Uncle Ray.

Billie Gale's father was a successful farmer, working the land and raising farm animals along the river, when George got pneumonia. He was hospitalized and within 4 days had died. Flora took her three daughters back to the Caprock, NM ranch where her parents lived, which was directly adjacent to her sister Cora Edwards Dallas' family. Flora and her daughters attended the one-room Soldier's Hill School and church with their cousins, aunt and grandparents.

In February 1934, Flora got pneumonia. On Valentine's day her daughters brought Valentines cards for her that they made in school that day, and Flora died while the girls were at her side.

Esta and J.B. Edwards, elderly at that time, felt it in the girls' best interest to allow the Reed sisters of their father to take the girls into their homes, so that they would not be raised with elderly grandparents.

Billie Gale and Georgene lived with their Aunt Maude; and Evelyne with their Aunt Lorinda. Their mother's twin, Cora, spoke often with great love for her three nieces. Had it not been for the Drought, Depression and her husband's mental illness Cora would have gladly kept the girls and raised them.

Billie Gale met a handsome sailor one Sunday when she and Georgene went to church in Corpus Christi, where they lived after completing high school. Billie Gale and Joe Sherrin married on January 22, 1954 in Corpus. Joe was a Navy pilot, which required him to travel a great deal. He moved his family to California, where their two children were born.

When the children were still at home, the family moved to Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, where Joe was stationed.

Billie Gale and Joe traveled extensively, including to several of our family reunions (CA, Alaska, TX, NM, FL). Billie Gale was a charming, smart woman with a beautiful smile.

They retired to the Jacksonville area of Florida, where they enjoyed many cruises and Disney World trips.

Blessed be Billie Gale's memory.
