Nathaniel Bonnell was a Capt. in the Militia and a wheelwright. He married Joanna Miller daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Riggs) Miller, about 1719, and lived in Elizabethown, Union Co., New Jersey, until after 1735 when his daughter Jane was buried in the Presbytrian Church Cemetery there. He bought some land along the Passaic River in Chatham, New Jersey, which was called "Bonnelltown" at the time, and built a home which was still standing in 1988 and was being used as a Antique shop. He was named in the Elizabethtown charter in 1740 as a member of the "Common Council" and was also a freeholder of the "Boroughs" in 1755.
