Funeral services for Harmon Roberts Vernor, of 3421 Chicago Blvd., member of one of the old Detroit families and dean of Detroit fire insurance men, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the William R. Hamilton Co. Chapel, 3975 Cass Ave. Burial will be in the family plot in Elmwood Cemetery.
Mr. Vernor died Thursday night at his home after being ill with pneumonia for two weeks. He was born in Detroit, Aug. 16, 1855, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jeremiah Smith Vernor. he was educated in old Central High School here and at Helmuth College at London, Ont.
In 1876 he became a member of the insurance agency of Vernor Brothers, established in 1852 by his father and his uncle, the late Benjamin Vernor. When his father died in 1916 he became sole owner of the agency. He was a nephew of the late James Vernor, former City Councilman.
In his early years, Mr. Vernor was active in the old Cass Baseball Club, being a charter member and serving as its secretary and treasurer. He was a member of the Detroit Athletic Club and Round Table Luncheon Club.
Active in Masonic affairs, he was a past master and former treasurer of Ashlar Lodge No. 91, F. & A.M.; a past high priest of King Cyrus Chapter No. 133, R. A. M.; a member of Monroe Council No. 1, Detroit Consistory; Detroit Commandery No. 1, Knights Templar, and Moslem Temple of the Shrine.
His is survived by his wife, Lydia Evans Vernor, whom he married Sept. 13, 1882, and a son, Stanley Evans Vernor.
