OBITUARY ~ The Garland News, June 29, 1916

MARGARET ELIZABETH PETWAY BUCHANAN

Mrs. M. E. Buchanan, affectionately called "Grandma" by old and young of the entire community for many years, passed to her Reward and was laid to rest last Friday in the K of P Cemetery following a long season of declining health.
Grandma Buchanan was eighty years of age, having been born July 4, 1836, at Nashville, Tennessee. Only a few more days and she would have seen another birthday. At the age of eighteen she graduated from the Nashville Female Academy. The following year, April 11, 1855, she married Dr. J.H. Buchanan of Nashville. To this union two children were born, John Maury and J.W. Buchanan. John Maury died June 15, 1874. She professed religion August 1, 1858, and joined the Methodist Church, of which she has been a devoted member and a tireless worker till the time of her death, as hundreds of souls in Garland can abundantly testify.
Since the death of her husband October 5, 1894, she has made her home with her son, J.W. Buchanan, and moved with him to Texas in 1903, where she has since remained, except for a few visits in Tennessee.
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church Friday at 5p.m., conducted by her Pastor, Rev. R.E. Porter. Brother Porter read a number of Grandma's marked passages from her own Bible., showing well the trend of her thought and the strength of her character. These scriptures showed her belief in the forgiveness of sin, forgiveness of man to man, and self-denial, all of which she put into her own life in marked degree. Several of her favorite songs such as "It Is Well With My Soul", "Sweet Hour Of Prayer", "When My Life's Work Is Ended", were sung.
Rev. W.D. Johns paid a tribute to her memory, he having known her longer than the other Pastors. Rev. J.Y. Fincher prayed a prayer that he had once prayed at her bedside, and that had touched her.
The pall bearers were T.N. Hickman, H.C. Smith, E.P. Squibb, M.C. Raney, A.M. Spillers, and Dr. G.W. Newman. A large crowd of sorrowing friends gathered to pay their last tribute to Grandma, and to tender consolation to the bereaved family.
Grandma will be greatly missed by everybody here, but we know she will be looking down from Heaven.
