He immigrated to this country in 1854 and settled on a farm in Tazewell County. Two weeks after his arrival his first wife passed away. Two of his children passed away during passage and were buried at sea.
He married his second wife, Hilke Martins "Hilda" Frerichs, in 1855, and they were the parents of, Henry J., Fred J., Katie J., Ebby J., Remmer J. and Tenie.
He was of the Baptist Faith and a Republican.
