Corporal with Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) serving with 1st Battalion of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry based in Edmonton, Alberta. Aged 44. He was born in Venezuela but emigrated to Edmonton in 1976 with his family. Survived by his parents, Joan and George Gomez; two brothers, Robert (Vivian) and Richard (Sara); two nieces and a nephew.

He and Cpl Jason Warren were killed, and eight other soldiers injured, in a suicide vehicle attack on their combat service support convoy that occurred on Highway One (known as "ambush alley") about five kilometres west of Kandahar City, Afghanistan.

Cpl Gomez spent 23 years in the army, much of it in the elite Airborne Regiment serving in Somalia until the unit was disbanded after the mission, also in Bosnia and Cyprus. He was known as a modest, unassuming man, who shunned promotions for the simple pleasure of remaining a corporal, the working rank of a soldier.

He was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration (CD) and Special Service Medal (SSM).

Funeral service held in Edmonton on August 1, 2006. Interment service held in Ottawa on August 3, 2006.
