AT2 US NAVY - VIETNAM

AUGUSTA - John David Abrams, 67, died Thursday April 28, 2016, at the Togus Veterans Memorial Hospital at Chelsea. He was born August 8, 1948, at Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Clifford and Charlotte Bradford Abrams.

John attended Ft. Dodge schools and graduated from Ft. Dodge high school; he also graduated from Ft. Dodge Community College in Iowa and attended three years at Mancato State College in Minnesota, before joining the Navy in 1974.

John served proudly in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and retired from the Navy after serving 20 years.

On July 1, 1978, in Brunswick, he married Sherrill Royal from Milo. John enjoyed watching sports on TV and old western movies. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, serving as "Grand Knight" in North Whitefield. He was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church in Whitefield and St. Francis Catholic Church in Winthrop.

John is survived by his wife, Sherrill Abrams, of Monmouth; his daughter, Christina Abrams, of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; two granddaughters, Jessica and Sarah Botnott; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Judith and Dennis Kemp, of Monmouth and Susan and Raymond Mosher, of Monmouth; nine stepgrandchildren; 8 stepgreat-grandchildren; his sister and her husband, Carol Lee and George Welch, of Glen Burnie, Md.

He was predeceased by his stepson, Gary Richards, Sr.; and a stepgrandson, Andy Peterson.

Interment will take place in the new Maine Veterans Cemetery, 163 Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta, Maine. (Central Maine Newspapers 5/3/2016 and Bragdon-Finley Funeral Home)
