Josephine A. Sloan, 89, of Streator passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at Heritage Health Therapy and Senior Care, Streator.
Funeral services will be at 12:00 P.M. Saturday at the Solon-Telford Funeral Home, Streator. Msgr. Philip Halfacre will officiate.
Visitation will be from 10-12 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Streator. Pallbearers will be her nephews, Zach Buckley, Jessie Risley, Dan Buckley, Bob Buckley and Micky Buckley.
Born September 17, 1926 in Streator she was the daughter of George and Catherine (Seaman) Bednar. She married Calvin C. Sloan on April 21, 1945 at St. Stephen’s Church, Streator. He survives in Streator.
She is also survived by daughters, Jane Wagner of Streator and Judy (Lee) Vanderschaaf of Elk River, Minnesota; grandchildren, Brian (Neva) Vanderschaaf of Springfield, Missouri and Curtis (Vicki) Vanderschaaf of Ruston, Louisiana; great grandchildren, Nicholas Vanderschaaf and step great grandchildren, Kevin and Jessica Ford; a sister, Marlene (Gerald) Gorski of Streator; brother, Richard “Soup” (Jean) Bednar of Streator and Eugene “Pudge” (Shirley) Bednar of Streator; numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Gloria Mueller; a son, Mark Sloan; sisters, Lucille Carby and Jean Sulzberger and a brother, Robert “Beaner” Bednar.
She attended and graduated from Sherman School. She was an excellent waitress and worked for several different restaurants.
Josephine was a life-long resident of Streator and loved everything about her town. Her passion was antiques and flea markets. Throughout her life, she had numerous “Country Shops” where she sold her Treasures. She served as President of AARP as well as working at the food pantry with her sister Jean. Josie had an excellent memory, especially in regards to the history and life of Streator, its families and the Slovak traditions.
Josephine and her husband Calvin celebrated a milestone year in 2016 celebrating their 71st wedding anniversary on April 21, 2016. Josie will be dearly missed by her family.
Memorials may be directed St. Michael the Archangel Church.
