Former McMurry Registrar Dies

Jerome Vannoy, 93, a former registrar at McMurry University and a founding member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, died Saturday in San Antonio.

Jack Holden, who worked for 20 years as McMurry's vice president for development, knew Vannoy well, both as a colleague and a person.

Many regarded Vannoy as ''very firm,'' Holden said.

But Holden also recalled him as a devoted and active member of Aldersgate UMC who was ''very strong on values, and very strong spiritually.''

''He was a very fair, very strong-willed person, and highly respected for those qualities,'' he said.

Vannoy held every office possible at Aldersgate - some of them more than once, according to his obituary.

After he moved to San Antonio, he joined Travis Park United Methodist Church, volunteering weekly in the church office until just a few months before he died.

He and his wife, Mary Lynn Vannoy, who preceded him in death, had moved to San Antonio in May 2000 to live with his daughter.

Vannoy was born in Corpus Christi on Sept. 29, 1913.

He graduated in 1936 from the University of Texas at Austin, where he met his future wife.

He worked as an athletic coach in Kerrville and Plainview before joining the athletic staff at McMurry in 1947.

Soon, he transitioned into the position of registrar at McMurry, maintaining that position for more than 30 years.

Hershel Kimbrell, whose coaching career at McMurry lasted more than three decades, described Vannoy as a ''a good McMurry Indian,'' using the school's now-retired team nickname.

''He was a really great fellow,'' he said. ''He was a good coach and a good Christian who helped a lot of kids.''

Vannoy, blessed with a ''sharp mind,'' helped students both in his role as a coach and as registrar, Kimbrell said, and also assisted the athletics department as its faculty representative.

''We were pretty close all the time he had anything to do with athletics,'' Kimbrell said. ''We depended on him to keep our program straight.''

Active in the Abilene Speakers Club and Kiwanis Club, Vannoy never gave up his passion for sports, officiating baseball, football, and basketball games.

Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at North's Funeral Home, 242 Orange St. Services begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Aldersgate UMC, 1741 Sayles Blvd. Memorials may be made to Aldersgate UMC or Travis Park UMC.

Jerome Vannoy died in his home in San Antonio, Texas, in the early morning hours of October 14, 2006. After more than 50 years of calling Abilene home, he and his wife Mary Lynn had moved to San Antonio to live with his daughter in May of 2000.

Jerome was born in Corpus Christi, Texas on September 29, 1913. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1936, where he met, courted and married Mary Lynn. He began his working career as an athletic coach, working in Kerrville, Plainview, and joining the athletic staff at McMurry University in 1947. Soon he transitioned into the position of Registrar at McMurry, and went on to hold that position for more than 30 years. He was active in the Abilene Speakers Club and Kiwanis Club and formed life long friendships through these organizations.

Jerome never gave up his passion for sports, though, officiating baseball, football, and basketball games, first on the field and court, and later from his armchair, changing channels to view as many of them as possible up until the day he died. The one passion which came before all others, though, was his commitment to God and service through the church. He was a charter member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and held every office possible, some of them more than once, and his voice was heard in the choir until he could sing no more. When moving to San Antonio, he continued his devotion to the people of God as a member of Travis Park United Methodist Church, volunteering weekly in the church office until just a few months before he died.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lynn, his brother, Vance Vannoy, and his son, Bob Vannoy.

He is survived by his son, Richard Vannoy of Austin, Texas; his daughter Reverend Karen Vannoy and son-in-law, Reverend John Flowers, of San Antonio; his grandson, Sean Duggan of Dallas, and his nieces and nephews; Patsy Malone, Tom Vannoy, Marjorie Mueck and Frances Metcalf.

Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6 - 7:30 p.m. at North's Funeral Home, 242 Orange St. Abilene, Texas. Services will be held in Abilene on Wednesday, October 18th, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1741 Sayles Blvd. at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery under the direction of North's Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held in San Antonio, on Wednesday, October 25th, at 6:00 p.m. at Travis Park United Methodist Church, 230 E. Travis Street, San Antonio, Texas 78205.

Memorials may be made to Aldersgate UMC or Travis Park UMC, who will greatly, miss his prayers, presence, gifts and service.
