A native of Edgerly, Louisiana, she had previously lived in Texas and Jackson County before moving to Haywood County in 1966. She was the daughter of the late Hampton and Lizzie Myers Ritter and was also preceded in death by her husband, Freeman Benjamin Deitz, who died in 1970; a daughter, Susan T. Hansen; one brother, Alvin Ritter; and grandchildren, Jonathan Best and Kade Jones. Velma is survived by daughters, Peggy S. Medford (Dean), Judy G. Jones (Jimmy), Kathy L. Ledford, Debbie D. McClure (David), Jean Cullen (Greg). Donna E. Deitz, all of Waynesville, Linda K. Smith (Dwight) of Clyde and Joyce A. Guillory (Steven) of Ragley, Louisiana; two sons, Steven R. Deitz of Waynesville and Ronald W. Delcomyn (Brenda) of Pasadena, Texas.
