Nicolas Tolentino Armijo was born in December 4, 1835 in Taos County, NM. He attended school in Chihuahua, Mexico in 1846, owned a store and had a home there. In November 1862, Nicolas married Barbara Chavez, who was the daughter of Jose Antonio Chavez y Castillo and Manuela Ortega. They had 12 children, including Juan Cristobal, Aurelia, Eloisa, Eduardo C, Manuela, Nicolas T Jr., Leonor R, and Manuela. Nicolas Armijo was a pioneer Albuquerque businessman and trader. He, and his brother Nestor, operated trade wagons into Chihuahua and Durango, Mexico. His other business ventures included raising sheep and operating a stage line between New Town and Old Town in Albuquerque in 1880. Armijo was known as a leading banker in both Albuquerque and Mexico. He was one of the incorporators of the First National Bank in Old Town, Albuquerque, and served as its first vice president. He also owned and managed real estate in downtown Albuquerque. He was a cousin of Ambrosio Armijo (1817-1882) and Nicholas Armijo led the wagon train that Dr. John D. Symington joined to come to New Mexico. In 1871, Dr. John D. Symington married Ambrosio Armijo's daughter, Maria Teresa de Jesus Armijo. Nicolas T. Armijo died on December 20, 1890 in Bernalillo County, NM. His wife Barbara built the N.T. Armijo building in his memory at 2nd and Central NW, which was completed in 1892.

Nicolas was married in 1862 to Barbarita Chavez de Armijo (1835-1929). They had the following children:
