Deceased Name: Former school trustee dies // DONALD BEAN: Besides the Nuview board, the Nuevo man was active in area farming communities.

Donald Cameron Bean, a former Nuview school trustee and a longtime Riverside County Farm Bureau director, died last week after a lengthy illness. He was 80.

A Nuevo resident for more than 50 years, Mr. Bean was active in the rural farming community.

"The community of Nuevo meant a lot to my grandpa," granddaughter Cameron Bean said in a statement. "He always tried to find ways to make people appreciate small-town life and preserve it."

Mr. Bean spent 12 years as the head of the Farm Bureau, a private nonprofit association of Riverside County farmers and ranchers that was formed in 1917. He also served in associations that represented hay and alfalfa growers.
He was honored in 2000 with the bureau's Robert M. Howie Award for his lifetime contributions to agriculture.
Mr. Bean also served eight years on the Nuview Union School District board, which served the farming communities of Lakeview and Nuevo.

Raised on his father's Temescal Canyon ranch near Corona, Mr. Bean joined the Marine Corps at the age of 17 in 1943, against his father's wishes. He served in the Pacific and saw combat in the Solomon Islands, where U.S. forces were trying to build an airstrip. After the war, he worked hauling hay to local dairies. He moved to the Nuevo area in 1950 to start his own farming business, which he later passed on to his son, Donald, and grandson, Cassidy.
In addition to his service as a school board trustee and Farm Bureau director, Mr. Bean was active in 4-H, Boy Scouts, the Lake Perris Farmers Fair and high school sports and agricultural activities. He also served in the local volunteer fire department for 15 years.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marilyn; siblings Gordon of Yorba Linda, Elinor of Chico, Doris of San Bernardino and Larry of Banning; children Carolyn of Perris, Linda of Moreno Valley, Richard of Oregon, Donald of Nuevo and Patty of Alaska; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Riverside National Cemetery.
