William P. “Bill” Thompson Jr., 89, of Union City, who died May 9, 2016, at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Union City First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tim Atkins officiating. Burial will follow in East View Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons and members of the Character Builders Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Hardee’s Breakfast Club and the Character Builders Sunday School Class.
The family requests that memorials be made to Characters Builders Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church or the Gideons.
He was born July 1, 1926, in Cass, Ind., son of the late William P. and Bertha (Pirtle) Thompson. He married the former Naomi June Gibbs June 27, 1948. She died Aug. 13, 1999. He was the former operator of Cadiz Five and Dime in Cadiz, Ky., and was the former owner and operator of the former Tri-County Credit Bureau in Union City. He was past president of the Tri-State Credit Bureau Association.
He was a decorated World War II U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Union City First United Methodist Church and the Character Builders Sunday School Class. He was also a member of Union City Civitan Club and of the Lions Club in Cadiz, as well as of Jones-Walker Post 4862 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. In addition, he was a Mason and a member of the Hardee’s Breakfast Club.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia and Donnie McWaters of Cerulean, Ky., and Debbie and Lyle Wiist of Magnolia Springs, Ala.; four grandchildren, Steven McWaters, Corey Wiist, Cyle Wiist and Callie Wiist; two great-grandchildren, Bradley Wiist and Michael Wiist; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.
