Haynes, Jerome Martin was born Jerome Martin Haynes on January 31, 1927 at 5:30 p.m., at St. Paul's Hospital in Dallas, TX, to Louise Schimelpfenig and Fred S. Haynes. He had four siblings, Major-General Fred E. Haynes (deceased), Dr. William Haynes (deceased), Dr. Mary Hayden of Portland, OR (still living), Hal Haynes (deceased).

Graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas in 1944. Spent a summer semester at LSU, 1 year at Yale, graduated from SMU. Enlisted in the Air Force in August 1946, was an information specialist (learned Japanese at Yale) honorable discharge in August of 1949, rank of sergeant. Went to college on GI Bill. Worked at WFAA for over 40 years, best known as Mr. Peppermint in the long-running children's TV show of the same name. Appeared in numerous regional theater production and countless feature films and TV movies. He is survived by his wife Doris Gibson (married May 29, 1955) and three children -daughter Carla Mann and her husband Jack Mann of Longview TX, son Gibson Haynes and his wife Melissa of Brooklyn, NY, son Andrew Haynes and partner John Brattin of NY, NY. Grandchildren Andrea Mann Doornbos and husband Jason Doornbos of Athens GA, Molly Mann Hughes and Kyle Hughes of Dallas, TX, Matthew Mann of South Royalton, VT, Curtis Mann of Longview, TX, and Satchel Haynes of Brooklyn, NY. 1 great-grandchild, Sidney Doornbos of Athens, GA. He passed away at 8:14 a.m. at a nursing facility in Longview TX, surrounded by his family. Private family services are pending, a memorial will be planned for a later date.
