The Rev. Tichenor, known as "Brother Jack" was my first pastor at First Baptist Church of Mt. Healthy, and he was the epitome of what a minister should be: kind, gentle, someone who loved people, and certainly loved the Lord with all his heart. He was small of stature but a man everyone looked up to because of his humble, Christ-like spirit. People of all ages adored him and I can say that I never met a kinder man in my life. My mother was the church secretary for a few years, and everyone should have such a nice boss as he was! The way he called her "Madame Secretary" was so cute. His own joy and fulfillment came from Jesus being first in his life, others second, and himself last. Even though health problems forced him to cut back on his schedule later in life, Brother Jack would say, "As long as the Lord can use me, I had best make myself available."

As a pastor of churches in Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee, Brother Jack took satisfaction in inspiring young men to become ministers and was well-known for his teaching ability and sense of humor. Brother Jack served as pastor of my church from 1966 to 1976 before filling the position of president of the State Convention of Baptists in Ohio in 1978. He was the only person to serve three consecutive terms.

His survivors were his lovely wife of 68 years, Dolly T. Tichenor; daughter Shirley Henderson; a brother, W.W. Tichenor; and nieces and nephews.
