George Spence Dies at 69 in Elizabeth City
Served Pasquotank County As Prosecuting Attorney, Recorder's Court Judge Elizabeth City, N.C., March 5--George Jones Spence, 69, practicing attorney and former judge of Recorders Court and prosecuting attorney of Pasquotank County for several years, died today at his home following a long illness.
Mr. Spence was a native of Nixonton, Pasquotank County, but had made his home here for the last 60 years. He was the son of the late Joseph Temple and Mrs. Josephine Jones Spence, and the husband of Mrs. Pearl Stevens Spence, who survives. He graduated from Wake Forest College May 25, 1906, with summa cum laude honors, and received his LL.B. degree on May 24, 1907. He began the practice of law following his graduation from college. Mr. Spence was a member of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as captain of ushers for 40 years, and also taught Sunday School for a number of years. He was a member of the Elizabeth City Kiwanis Club and was active in Scout work.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Albert W. [Ann] Hargrove, of Elizabeth City; a son, George J. Spence, Jr., of Chapel Hill; a sister, Mrs. R.L. Edwards, of Raleigh; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Blackwell Memorial Church by Dr. R.W. Kicklighter, pastor. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery.
