Alexander H. Hughey is believed to be the son of Henry and Mary (Cook) Hughey though this has not been proven. Henry, Jr., Ezekiel and Isaac Hughey are believed to be his brothers

Alexander first appeared in Lincoln County, Tennessee records in October 1822 in a court case.

Alexander H. Hughey married Mary Lavena "Polly" Davis about 1823 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Absolom Davis and Jane McClellan of Lincoln County, Tennessee.

By the tax records from 1830 to 1832, Alexander owned 96 acres.

Alexander Hughey suffered a rattlesnake bite in 1842 and lived about a year and died in 1843, leaving his wife Mary Lavena Davis Hughey and eight children.


Will of Alexander Hughey:

I, Alexander Hughey, do make and publish this my last will and testament hereby revoking and making void all other wills by me at any other time made.
First, I direct that my funeral expenses and all my debts be paid, as soon after death as possible out of my monies that I may be due possessed of or may come into the hands of my executor by sale of a sufficient quantity of my personal property to do the same.
Secondly, I give and bequeath to my wife, Mary Hughey, all of the balance of my property both personal and seal to be hers to support her children on her lifetime or widowhood and if my wife, Mary, should marry, I will and bequeath that she have a child's portion of my property that should be in her hands at the time of her marriage and the balance be equally divided between my beloved children, heirs of my body: Elvira J. Hughey, Parthena, Mary E., Franklin A., Robert, Sarah A., Martha L., and William Henry Hughey.
My executor is witness whereof I do this with set my hand and seal. This 11th day of March 1843.
I also appoint my beloved wife, Mary Hughey, my executrix to this my last will and testament.
Signed, sealed, and published in our presence and we here subscribe and name here to in the presence of the Testator.

T. W. Buchanan administrator of Alexander Hughey's will paid John C. Ennis, guardian for Franklin A., Mary E., Robert, Sarah A., Martha and William Hughey, also in right of his wife Parthenia, and Washington Wilson in right of his wife Mary Wilson(widow of Alexander H. Hughey). February 22, 1851.

1.Elvira Jane Hughey born 6 August 1824; married Mathew T.Wilson, son of Robert and Hannah (Paul) Wilson on 4 March 1847; died 16 July 1848; buried in Wilson Cemetery in Lincoln County, TN.

2.Parthena Hughey born ca 1827; married 15 Nov. 1848 to John C. Ennis; not known when or where she died; last seen in 1860 Alabama Census living in Limestone County.

3.Mary Elizabeth Hughey born 4 May 1829; married 6 October to Robert W. Wilson, son of Robert and Hannah (Paul) Wilson;died 27 April 1893. buried in Wilson Cemetery in Lincoln County, TN.

4. Franklin A. Hughey born ca 1833; on 3 October 1858 he married Sarah Margaret Smith; not known when or where he died.Franklin was living in Marshall County, TN so it is very likely that he died there. Franklin served in the Civil War as a private in 44th Confederate Infantry.

5.Martha L. Hughey born 27 Feb. 1833; married 4 October 1858 to James M. Clift; died 7 Sept. 1889.

6.Robert Hensley Hughey born 20 Oct. 1835; married 25 Nov. 1856 to Sarah Margaret Tate, daughter of Samuel and Mary J. Tate; died 13 Jan. 1904.

7.Sarah Ann Hughey born ca. 1837; married 25 Nov. 1860 to James F. Cathey, son of Cyrus and Nancy L. (Smith) Cathey; not known where or when she died.

8.William Henry Hughey born 12 Nov. 1841; married 14 Feb. 1866 to Martha G. Cunningham; died 11 March 1903 in Obion County,TN.

I do not know if this is the final resting place of Alexander H. Hughey but since several members of his family are buried here and the Wilsons and Hugheys were interconnected by marriage---I feel it is fitting.
