Peyton C. Edge was the son of Marlin Edge and Mary Stewart and was likely born in Monroe County, Alabama as suggested by C.T.Lewis contributor. He married Mary L. Mixon on the 23 Nov 1848 in Marion County, Georgia where they made their home close to several Stewart families which were possibly relatives. They had one daughter, Nancy Ann Elizabeth Edge who was born in April of 1850.
His wife died, probably in childbirth, in abt. 1852, and his parents took over the raising of his young daughter. As far as we know, he never remarried and worked as a grocer, a retail merchant, or farmed for the rest of his life. He was listed as a 3rd Lieutenant in the 961 Dist. of the battalion in Schley county, Georgia with a muster date of 2 May 1862. In 1863 he enlisted as Corporal in Co. D. of the 5th State Guard Infantry. In 1864 he appears on the Schley County, GA. census for re-organizing the Georgia Militia and 2 Sep 1865, in Macon county, GA, he received a Presidential Pardon for his part in the rebellion against the United States during the Civil War and swore to defend the Constitution of the US and support all laws and proclamations with reference to the emancipation of slaves. There is no evidence he ever owned any slaves but his father did.
As evidenced by the inscription on his grave marker it seems clear that his life was cherished and he was well and truly loved by his daughter and only child.
He was my 3GGF and I would love to know what his middle name was. Judy Snellgrove West

Twas sweet to listen to the words that flowed from thy dear lips, alas now sealed in death.
