John Dwight Dolan was the son of Maggie Ann Saunders and John Alexander Dolan. John was born in the same house as his siblings and his father. It was a log home built in the 1800's by his grandfather.
"Dwight" as he was called back home, grew up in Lebanon, Missouri. During high school at Lebanon High, he worked for the local dry cleaners.
Shortly after graduation John joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve Unit out of Springfield, Missouri.
After graduation John took an FBI course from Clarence Kelly and did such an excellent job that the Chief of Police in Lebanon asked him to come visit when he turned 21.
John served the citizens of Lebanon on the police force until Uncle Sam called him for military service. John was the first person from Lebanon, Missouri to be called up. He said he had to report to Springfield by that night. His unit left Springfield going 60 miles per hour on a troop train. John said that they didn't stop until they reached San Diego and that at every stop along the way, people were standing on the train platforms waving flags and waving their hands!
He served two tours of active duty in Korea and Japan during the Korean Conflict (WAR) Since John had a law enforcement background he was assigned as Tank Commander of an Amphibious Tank. His tank located and set sights on the target and fired, then the other tanks followed fire using the same coordinates.
John was proud to have served as Sergeant in the USMC.
When he was sent home from Korea, he was the only one sent home at that time. He said there was no parade, no welcoming committee, except that the Chief of Police was at the house waiting for him to go back to work! He wanted to take a couple of months off, but the Chief said, "You can report to work tomorrow!"
At the time John left Lebanon to head for Kansas City, Missouri he was serving as Assistant to the Chief of Police.
In Kansas City John worked for Westinghouse, CECO Corporation and Black & Veatch Consulting Engineers. He was a Senior Design Technician when he retired in 1993.
After retirement John enjoyed traveling and family.
He was the sole survivor of his family. He was preceded in death by his son, Aaron Dean Dolan; his parents; one sister, Nell Rose Sams; three brothers, Freeman Dolan of Lebanon, Missouri; Floyd (Tom) Dolan and Clarence (Pod) Dolan of Longview, Washington and a brother who died in infancy, Donald Monroe Dolan (Little Jackie)
John will be missed by his family and loved ones!
John had the most gifted sense of humor! Several months before he died, we were driving out to lunch and I said, "I Love You!" and he started singing, "I Love You a bushel and a peck..." He definitely made me laugh! I will miss his smile, hearing him laugh, and saying, "Good night, I love you!" every night!
So John, If you can hear me..."I Love You!"
