Our beloved mother and grandmother passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at her home in Saginaw at the age of 102. Ella was born on November 7, 1913 in Akron, Michigan to Gottfried and Anna (Rusch) Richter. She attended Arthur Hill High School and Mrs. Sperling’s School of Design. She worked as a dress maker and seamstress for many years and her favorite designs were wedding dresses. Ella designed and made her own wedding dress and all her bridesmaids’ dresses for her wedding, including the flower girl and ring bearer’s attire.
She was a Sales Representative and Area Manager for 36 years for Field Enterprises Educational Corporation which published World Book Encyclopedias. Ella sold noodle machines from Italy and made homemade noodles for many people. She also volunteered for the Michigan Blood Bank for many years.
Ella was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was confirmed in the German language and taught Sunday school in German. She embroidered the altar cloth still in use after 60 years. Ella was a life member of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia. She was a member of the Washington Club for 70 years. Ella was also a member of the Wolga Club, the Moose Family Center #82 and Merry Wives Club. Ella always enjoyed dancing, especially the polka.
Ella loved to travel and has been to the Orient, Russia, Israel, Morocco, Turkey, Greece, Mexico and many countries in Europe and climbed inside the pyramids of Egypt. She has vacationed in many states and always enjoyed Disney World. Even at 96, she spent three days at the Disney Parks from early morning to closing time. Three months before the turned 101, she walked the Saginaw Fair and rode the double Ferris wheel.
Ella was married to Herman Arnst on June 14, 1947. He predeceased her in September of 1976. Her children are Bonnie Arnst of Saginaw; Rod Arnst of Lansing; one grandson, Nicholas Arnst, Los Angeles, California; a brother, Richard Harold Richter of Saginaw; a sister-in-law, Marge Arnst of Pinellas Park, Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
Ella’s family wishes to thank her wonderful caregiver, Marcie Murillo, Dr. Palya and his staff and the nurses on 5th Floor East at Covenant Cooper for their love and concern. Funeral service will take place 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 16, 2016 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1502 Maine Street in Saginaw. Rev. R.J. Thaler will officiate with burial in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Rd., (between Shattuck and McCarty), where the family will be present on Sunday from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. and at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
