Alma (Gritzan) Garland, 85, of 1638 Lucesco Road, Leechburg (Allegheny Township), died Monday, April 8, 2002 at Kittanning Care Center.
She was born Aug. 18, 1916 in Bagdad to Carl and Augusta (Gerber) Gritzan.
Mrs. Garland was a block operator for 12 years with the Pennsylvania Railroad.
She was a member of the Allegheny Presbyterian Church in Allegheny Township since 1931, the longest membership of her church, where she served as elder, clerk of session, church treasurer and Sunday school teacher. She was the founder of the Kitchen band and one of the founders and a member of the adult and junior choirs.
Her other memberships included the Eastern Star, Dames of Malta, Rainbow Girls, March of Dimes and the Golden Agers of Freeport and Allegheny Township. She served as Judge of Elections at precinct 2 McKees for 25 years and received recognition and an award for 50 years of voting. She was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout mother.
Survivors include one son, Allen D. Garland of Allegheny Township, with whom she made her home; and two sisters, Ella Garland and Dorothy Beatty, both of Allegheny Township.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, A. Dale Garland, who died in 2000; six brothers, Richard, Carl, Henry, William, Edward and Clair Gritzan; and one sister, Edna Gritzan.
GARLAND - Friends of Alma (Gritzan) Garland, 85, of 1638 Lucesco Road, Leechburg (Allegheny Township), who died April 8, 2002, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Richard L. Redmond Funeral Home, Inc., 524 High St., Freeport. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Allegheny Presbyterian Church with her pastor, the Rev. Lloyd Riggle, officiating. Interment will be in Brookland Cemetery, Allegheny Township.
