Son of John Traughber Magowan and Emma Gatewood Magowan.
He was a breeder of trotting horses. Outstanding among the horses he bred were J. Malcolm Forbes and Mainleaf. Yearlings which he bred and sold in Madison Square Gardens topped the sales on several occasions. Among these were Frank Perry, world champion pacer; Emma Gatewood, named for his mother; Emma Magowan, Mr. Dudley, Dr. Elmore Cotillion.
