Joseph Samuel Brocco was born on December 3, 1925 among the rich farmlands of Valley Home, CA to parents Benjamin and Angiolina (Matasci) Brocco. Joe was called home by the Lord on May 9, 2016 at the age of 90 surrounded by his loving family.

After graduating from Ceres High School in 1943, Joe answered the call of his country and served in the U.S. Army between 1944 and 1946, stationed in the South Pacific.

Joe married Bonnie J. Sparks on Dec. 3, 1950. Joe and Bonnie decided to raise their family in Ceres, where they lived happily for 54 years.

Joe was employed at Milk Producers and Gallo Glass in Modesto before starting his job in 1957 at the Ceres Post Office, serving as Assistant Postmaster from 1967 to 1987.

For Joe, the sun rose and set around his family; his love was ever-present. He was a constant source of love and support for his children, and he never missed his grandchildren's events – whether a golf match, birthday party, soccer or softball game.

While making Ceres his home, traveling was in his blood. Often he and Bonnie would pack their kids into an RV to travel across the country, visiting friends and family along the way. He especially loved spending time at the coast in Santa Cruz and in Washington state.

Joe loved the simple things in life, among them Italian Food, hard candy, a good cup of coffee, apple pie and his beloved dogs – especially pugs Hoosier and Pepper. He also loved sports – both as a player and spectator. If he wasn't strolling the links at River Oaks Golf Course, you might find him watching pro football, baseball or basketball in his well-worn recliner. In his later years he took to the dance floor, swinging to the tunes of his youth at the Modesto and Riverbank senior centers with his close companion and ladyfriend Gladys Robirds.

An avid gardener, each summer Joe would fill his truck with the bounty of his back yard – the richest tomatoes ("Joe-matoes"), peaches, avocados, lemons and vegetables to be had – for delivery to friends throughout town.

Joe, a devoted member of the Davis Park Church of Christ, is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years Bonnie, sister Carolyn Barindelli and brothers John and Samuel Brocco. He leaves behind a loving family who will forever remember his warm spirit, including his children Ben (Linda) Brocco, Irice (Robert) Milligan and Susan (Eric) Johnston, seven grandchildren and sister Inez Bavaro.

Friends and family are invited to a visitation and service on Thursday, May 19 between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Salas Brothers Funeral Home.  A memorial services will be held at Salas Brothers on Friday, May 20 at 10 a.m. followed by graveside services at Ceres Memorial Park.
