Ralph H. Monaghan, 83, of Springfield, died Thursday, October 19, 2006 at his home.

He was born September 1, 1923 in Gillespie, the son of Robert N. and Katherine "Kitty" Owens Monaghan. He married Adrian Chiste in 1950, she died in 1966. He married Patricia Hamrick in 1982, she survives.

Mr. Monaghan was a World War II veteran serving in the United States Navy as an aviator in the South Pacific. He piloted heavy transport and cargo aircraft for the Military Air Transport Services (MATS) and ferried military personnel and supplies in and out of war zones. He later piloted cargo transport aircraft in the Berlin Airlift. He retired from the Navy as a Lt. Commander in 1964 having logged more than 14,000 hours of aviation flight time.

He became an executive pilot for the State of Illinois in 1964 and later served as chief executive pilot until his retirement in 1985 after serving six Illinois governors and numerous elected officials.

Survivors: Wife, Patricia; two sons, Michael S. (wife, Susan) of Springfield, and Thomas A. of Greensboro, N.C.; two daughters, "Kitty" (husband Doug) McCarthy of Decatur, and Susan (husband David) McCain of Greensboro, N.C.: two step daughters, Deborah Dimond (husband Willard Steinke) of Bolingbrook, IL, and Diane Grubb of Springfield; seven grandchildren, three step grandchildren and one step great grandchild.
