Following his mother's death on March 9, 1916, he was adopted by his maternal grandmother Effie Jeanette (Sampson) Bailey (1863- after 1920) who renamed him Arthur Jerome Bailey. Note: Effie Jeanette Sampson was married three times: 1st (1884) to George Edward Townsend (1861-1939); 2nd (1898) to Theophilus Curnick (1870-1903); and 3rd (1916) to Asauph "Asa" Bailey (1874- after 1918).
