A resident and native of Jeanerette, La. Was a member of Saint Peter United Methodist Church. Was a 1964 graduate of Francis Marion Boley High School.

Son of the late Arthur Clay Sr. and Mrs. Jessie Mae Joe Clay; husband of Veronica Lumpkin Clay, father of seven sons; Sandis Clay Jr. (Sarah), Van Clay, Dwayne Clay, Curtis Lumpkin, Sr. (Melissa), Cleo Gibson, Willie Lumpkin(Lakeisha), and Linelle Lumpkin; nine daughters, Kendra Clay (Robert), Sherika Clay, Deagra Lumpkin (Titus), Eunice Polidore (Rivers), Evelyn Lumpkin, Angela Tolliver (Ervin), Aneatra Barabin (Joseph), Renerta Lumpkin, and Christine Lockett; one special son he reared, Hosier Merritte; one special son/nephew, Rodney Marks Sr.; one special niece, Jalayna Marks; three sister, Alice Clay Boyance (Donald), Diana Clay Marks (Roy) and Linda Clay Lewis (Edward Jr.); one brother the late Arthur Clay Jr.; 55 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Paternal grandson of the late Oscar "Son" Clay Sr. and Cora Francois Clay, maternal grandson of the late Corrine Branch Hawk, Dennis Joe Sr. and Jessie Hawk Sr.; uncle of the late Edward McKinley Lewis.

Pallbearers were Michael Lewis, Sr., Tremaine Lewis, Curtis Lumpkin, Sr., Van Clay, Dwayne Clay and Robert Lee Brooks. Honorary pallbearers were Herman Ray Buie Sr., Edward Lewis, Sr., Roy P. Marks, Sr. Sandis Clay Jr., Hosier Merritte, Rodney Marks, Wendell Marks, Sr., Willie Lumpkin, River Polidore, Peter Lumpkin, Eldridge Marks, Tony Lockette, Roy P.
