GRACIE MAHONEY CASSIDY OBITUARY
Mrs. Gracie Mahoney Cassidy, 88, passed away at home May 5, 2016, in Anchorage, Alaska. Gracie was born on July 15, 1927, in Franklin, Va. She was the daughter of the late Willie and Mae Moody. Gracie was an Alaska pioneer, arriving in the territory of Alaska in 1949. She and her husband Vern were on an adventure that would ultimately last a lifetime. In 1951, they moved their family 10 miles out of town to the Rabbit Creek area. There Gracie began the task of establishing a home for her husband and children. While caring for an infant and watching out for a toddler, she peeled logs during the day so they could be added to the cabin in the evenings. Washing clothes in the creek while living in a wall tent with no running water or electricity were just part of the experience. She loved picking berries when she wasn't busy being a Boy Scout leader or getting us to all our activities. Gracie was a reluctant sheep hunting companion to her husband, an avid gardener and played softball and horseshoes well into her 70s. She loved to bowl and was a league bowler for over six decades, usually bowling on two teams. She finished her last season only a few short weeks before her passing. She had passion for dancing; usually twice a week you could find her on the dance floor surrounded by fellow dance enthusiasts. Gracie could always fill you in on current events as she enjoyed staying informed on both local and national news. If you were to ask her she would tell you that she had a good life. She was our anchor and will be sorely missed. Gracie is survived by her four children, Jeanette and Richard Ludka of Ridgefield, Wash., Margie and Glenn Corey of Wilsonville, Ore., Rod and Sandy Mahoney of Anchorage, Alaska, and Dale Mahoney of Anchorage; six grandchildren, Sean Ludka, Lindsey, Kevin and Paul Corey, Madison Mahoney and Piper Mahoney; one great-grandchild, Alekzander Ludka; one brother, Willard Moody Sr.; and by four sisters, Odell McFarland, Mary Ellen Romanczyk, Bertha Foster and Sue Bell, all of Virginia. Gracie is preceded in death by her husband, Vern Mahoney; second husband, Bud Cassidy; two sisters, Iva Haywood and Mable Bently, both of Virginia; and by five brothers, Willie Moody, Ryland Moody, Thomas Moody, Frank Moody and David Moody, all of Virginia. A graveside service will be held at 12 p.m. on Friday, May 20, 2016, at Angelus Memorial Park Cemetery.
