Cornelius Butler (1738-94) was born in Edgartown, Massachusetts and died in the West Indies. He married Jane Coffin (1740-1830). He was master of the brig Rising Empire commanded by Captain Richard Whellen, 1776. (Lineage Book, Volume 37, published by the Daughters of the American Revolution.)

The New England Historical & Genealogical Register, 1847-2011 for Cornelius Butler,Volume 059 (1905)lists his death in West Indies.

Also father of Waitstill (Butler) Griffen.
