Mr. Rabe was a native of Pontiac, Ill., and had retired from the U.S. Navy in 1964 as a senior chief electronics technician. For the next 25 years he continued to serve his country in various capacities both within the public and private sectors. He was employed by the Naval Sea System Command at the time of his retirement in 1989. He was a proud World War II veteran and a member of the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 5.
"Big Al," as he was known by his numerous friends, was an avid fisherman. Many joyous hours were spent on the Chesapeake Bay with friends and family in search of flounder and tautog. Of great pride was the 14-pound 12-ounce flounder he landed in 1974. This was the largest flounder caught that year and remains one of the largest caught on record. He will be missed by many friends within the Virginia Beach Anglers Club.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Norma J. Rabe; two sons, Alan A. and John M., both of Virginia Beach; a brother, Delbert R. of Dwight, Ill.; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his mother, father, two sisters and a son.
A funeral will be held for family and friends at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.
