Renald "Rennie" Raymond Chapek, 72, of Cleghorn, Wis., died October 5, 2006, at home. He was born to Raymond and Eva (Jensen) Chapek on April 30, 1934, in Jim Falls, Wis.

Rennie grew up in the town of Arthur, working on the family farm. He attended Crystal Springs (Cobban) School, and graduated from Chippewa Falls Senior High. At the age of 17, he joined the Navy, serving from 1951 to 1955. He spent most of his tour doing repair work on airplanes as an aviation structural mechanic while stationed on Kwajalein Island — part of the Marshall Islands in East Micronesia. While stationed at Moffett Field in California, he met Hattie Lau; and they were married in Alameda, Calif., on February 5, 1955. They were married for 51 years. They lived in San Jose, Calif., for eight years. He worked at United Airlines as a painter, and then later at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company as an insurance agent. While living in San Jose, he completed a carpenters apprenticeship program from the California Department of Industrial Relations on March 21, 1960. He then started his career as a journeyman carpenter in California for the next two years, before returning to Wisconsin.

In Kenosha, Rennie built the home that he and Hattie raised their family in, and was a member of Kenosha's Carpenters Local 161 for the next 16 years. In 1978, Rennie and Hattie moved north to Eau Claire. He joined Eau Claire Carpenters Local 1074. They also purchased Kamp Dakota Campground, later changed the name to Kamp O'Klare Campground, and operated it for the next 19 years, before retiring in 1997.

Rennie enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, reading and polka music. He was an avid reader and a whiz at crossword puzzles. In the winters, when the campground was closed for the season, they would take trips visiting friends, relatives and campers they had become friends with all over the country. Even after they retired, they continued these winter vacations, visiting their former campers, and maintained contact with many of them. Rennie enjoyed building anything from birdhouses to cabinets; and, as he often said, "just puttering" in his workshop he converted out of the spare garage at the home they moved into in Cleghorn when they retired.

He is survived by his loving wife, Hattie; daughter, Lori (Gordon Carleton) Chapek-Carleton of Lansing Mich.; son, Raymond (Linda) Chapek of Eau Claire; step-grandson, Christopher (Jessica) Briggs of Chippewa Falls; sister, Faye (Everett) Hedrington of Chetek; sister-in-law, Linda Chapek of Lake in the Hills, Ill.; several sisters-and-brothers-in-law; nieces and nephews.

Rennie was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Dennis.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28 at Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church in Cleghorn, south of Eau Claire. From Highway 93, take County HH east one mile to the stop sign in Cleghorn. Take a right, following HH another three miles to the corner of Hillview Road and HH. The church sits on this corner, across Hillview Road from Union Cemetery. Pastor Jack Starr will be officiating at both the memorial service and the burial service.

Interment of the cremains will be at the beautiful Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, off of Highway 53, just south of Spooner, on the following Monday, Oct. 30. Services will start at 11 a.m. in the chapel, followed by a military service at the graveside.

Rennie will be remembered for his outstanding woodworking skills and humorous outlook on life. The many campers who became their lifelong friends will remember how he kept the campground lawns and buildings in immaculate condition. His deer hunting camp partners and the friends and relatives who joined him on his earlier Canadian fishing trips will always have fond memories of their times together. He will be very much missed by his family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, S10777 County Road HH/I, Eleva, WI 54738, or the American Cancer Society.
