James was the son of Margaret B. Donahue, the dear brother of John L. Donahue Jr., and Betsey Donahue of Park Ridge Illinois, he was predeceased by his father John L. Donahue Sr. James graduated from Maine South High School in 1966 and after two years of college, one at St., Joseph, in Rensselaer Indiana and one in Memphis State College he enlisted in the US Marine Corp in February 1969. James arrived in Vietnam in November 1969 where he was assigned to and served with Battery H, 3d Battalion, 11th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

Cpl Donahue's cousin, Capt. John W. Carlson USMC, was the third Park Ridge serviceman killed in Vietnam on December 7, 1966.

During the month of August the 11th Marines were in support of the 1st Marine Division and the DaNang vital area in Quang Nam Province with Battery H on Fire Support Base Ryder (Hill 579) in Hiep Duc District.

On August 22, the Marines were reinforcing a bunker with sand bags when it unexpectedly caved in and caused the death of Cpl James Donahue.
