Walter Leroy Knott, known as Leroy Knott, was born in 1867 in Tipton, Cedar County, Iowa, a son of Harriet Clarissa (née Starr) and the Rev. John Wilson Knott.

"LeRoy" Knott, a school teacher, age 23 years and 11 months, enlisted in the U.S. Army on 9 January 1891 in Jackson, Michigan. He was 5 feet, 8¾ inches tall, with blue eyes, light brown hair, and a light complexion. Private Knott was assigned to Company C, 19th Infantry Division, and transferred in 1892 to the Hospital Corps. He served in: Fort Mackinac, Michigan; Niagara, New York; and Fort Thomas, Kentucky. He was discharged on 11 November 1895. In 1900, he was enumerated in Hamilton, Ohio, working as a laborer.

Leroy Knott and Miss Estella Huntington were married on 15 January 1903 in Carlyle, Clinton County, Illinois. The couple, parents of two children, separated about 1913.

Leroy Knott in 1920 was working in Chicago as a telegraph messenger. Estella Knot was institutionalized in the Central State Hospital, Marion County, Indiana. Their daughter Ruth, age 9, and son Paul, age 7, were living with their uncle Oliver M. Huntington in Johnson County, Indiana. Estella died in 1923 at the state hospital.

Leroy Knott, age 63, was enumerated in 1930 in Chicago, working as a messenger. He died there later that year.
