Hilda McGray, 97
TOPSHAM - Hilda McGray, 97, went to be with the Lord on May 19, 2016. She died peacefully at her home at the Highlands in Topsham under the care of Hospice.

She was born in Stockton Springs on Oct. 30, 1918, one of nine children. She lived in Winterport and attended Winterport schools.
Hilda dedicated her life to helping others and will be remembered for her generous spirit and kindness toward others. Her passions in life were her family and serving the Lord. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Topsham for many years, and later transferred to Maine Street Baptist Church in Brunswick.
Mrs. McGray worked at various jobs throughout the years including Jay Brush, SAD 75 School Department, and Elder Care, to name a few. Up to the age of 91 she still was driving and taking friends to doctor's appointments, grocery shopping and church. When asked why she did all this, her answer was, "These people need help and I can still do it. Maybe someone will help me when I get old."
She also was an avid knitter and made afghans for all her children, and hats and mittens for her grandchildren. When the great-grandchildren dressed for playing in the snow, they would only wear their great-Nana's mittens.

Mrs. McGray leaves behind four children, Duane McGray and wife Sue and five children of Nashville, Tenn., Evedene (Ev) Leech and two children of Brunswick, Roxanne York and husband Ron and four children of Bailey Island, and Morton (Moe) and wife Carolyn and four children of Daytona, Fla. She also leaves 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, with one on the way. She leaves two sisters, Mrs. Winnotta Reynolds of Herman, and Ms. Marion Ryan of Winterport; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband Linwood, in 1983; her parents; sisters Virginia (Warren) Shoppe, and June Calderwood (Jim); brothers James Carleton (Olga), Floyd Carleton, Lloyd Carleton (Gloria), and Burleigh Carleton (Shirley); and granddaughter Keri McGray.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Highlands, especially the nurses at Friendship Cove, for all the excellent care for our mother these past four years. We could never have asked for anything more. We are forever grateful to each and every one of you, and God bless you all.
Her funeral will be held at Brackett Funeral Home on Federal Street in Brunswick on Sunday at noon, with visitation on Saturday from 5-7 p.m.
