Mississippi Governor. Born in Rolling Fork, Mississippi, he earned his law degree at the University of Alabama. He was a Mississippi State Senator from 1928 to 1931, and a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1932 to 1940. Elected Lieutenant Governor in 1944, he became governor upon the death of Thomas Bailey in 1946. He was reelected and served until 1952. In 1948, he unsuccessfully ran for Vice President on the States Rights ticket.
