Son of Jacob Leonardsen Vandergriff, Sr. and Sarah ? in Granville Co, NC. Granville Co became Johnston Co, NC and lived there with his parents on a Creek named Mims a branch of Crabtree Creek til his father sold it in 1766. His grandfather Leonard Jacobsen Vandergriff, Sr. and his wife Edy had lived in Grandville Co, NC since being recorded there in the 1750 Tax Lists along with their sons Leonard Jr. and his own father Jacob. Garrett had several brothers including Christopher b 1755 Granville Co, NC, Jacob Jr b 1763Johnston Co, NC, Gilbert b 1768 Johnston Co, NC. He has sisters Rebecca Pilgrim reapplied for a pension on 29 Jul 1848, stating that she was born and partly raised in Henry County [formed from Pittsylvania County in 1777], and that two of her brothers served with Amos Pilgrim. One of the brothers was probably Garrett Vandergrift(S7780). With this application she submitted a family record on a page of an Old Testament showing the births of all three of her children, as follows: Rebeca pilgrim was born 1773.Mary pilgrim was Born in the year 1795 Sept 12thLee pilgrim was Born august 7 1797thChristen pilgrim was Born February 28 1805 Son and Daughter of of Amos Pilgrim. In an application for bounty land dated 19 Aug 1856, Rebecca Pilgrim’s age is given as79. On 7 Aug 1866 Lee Pilgrim, 70, and Mary Carter, 72, sole heirs of Rebecca Pilgrim who died on 26 Sep 1863, applied for the pension that was suspended during the Civil War. Their application was certified by David Carter and John Cadis. and Mary born 1766 in Johnston Co, NC and married Ezekiel Pilgram. Mary died in 1851 in Nashoba Co, MS.
Garrett's father and grandfather appear on the Henry Co, VA tax lists in 1779 and Garrett appears on the 1782 Tax lists.
On 11/19/1832 he made a affidavit as to his Revolutionary War Service:
1. He entered service in Henry Co, VA under Capt. Samuel Houston in the militia service with Col. Preston. He was stationed at Draper Meadows for three months.
2. He again entered service in the same county and served under Capt. Creight the year he does not recollect it was in the militia service under Col. Mann. He served a three month tour.
3. Again he entered service in the same county under Capt. Jonathan Hamby. He was marched to Salisbury, NC by his Capt. where he was placed under the command of Major Rose a regular officer. Marched by him to Ninety Six in SC. Where he was placed under the command of Col. William Washington under the command of Gen Nathaniel Greene. Served for three months and was discharged.
4. He entered service as a volunteer in Henry Co, VA. He served under Capt. Creight and Col. Preston. He served for three months and was again discharged.
He has lost all of his discharges and has no record of his age in his possession.
He knows he was born in Wake Co, NC [Not Created until 1771] Since the Revolutionary War he has resided in Henry Co, Virginia to Abbeville and Pendleton Cos, South Carolina from there to Habersham County, Georgia where he now resides.
His name No. 38 appears along with his brother Christopher No. 37 on Capt. Jonathan Hamby's Co., Virginia Milita.

He is found on the 1790 Pendleton Co, SC Census 1-0-3-0-0.

He is in the 1827 GA Land Lottery from Habersham Co, GA.

Appears on the 1830 Habersham Co, GA Blue Creek Dist Census, p 51:
1000000001000=0000100001000=1 male slave. that one male age 70-80 and one female age 70-80.

He appears again on the 1840 Habersham Co, GA Blue Creek Dist Census, p. 125:
one male age 80-90 and one female age 30-40.

He does not appear on 1850 Habersham Co, GA Census.

I was told by Joe Vandergriff that his father and grandfather has shown him the rock that marked Garrett's and his wife and his son's John and his wife Sarah's graves in the old section in the back of the cemetery.
