James John Bergstedt, 64, of Embarrass, formerly of Esko, died unexpectedly from cardiac arrest Tuesday, April 10, 2001, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 6, 1937, in Duluth to Sakrie and Ida (Nasi) Bergstedt. He married Dottie Howarth on Dec. 9, 1969, in Coeur D Alene, Idaho. He was an accomplished chef, enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing and playing golf and was especially known for his many inventions. He was a member of the Apostolic Lutheran Church in Esko.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy "Dottie," of Embarrass; two daughters, Shawna of Mountain Iron and Karie (Patrick) Vandenberg of Fresno, Calif; four sons, Robert (Jessica) of Sandstone, James of Duluth, Kevin (Lena) of Modesto, Calif., and the Rev. Jim (Dee Dee) of Suisun, Calif; nine grandchildren and another grandchild due to arrive in September; four brothers, Edwin (Luella) of Cloquet, Robert (Bernice) and Jack, both of Esko, and Peter (Joyce) of Forest Lake; seven sisters, Mildred (Kirk) Otto and Mabel Bumala, both of California, Marian (Milton) Widen of Minneapolis, Phyllis (Raymond) Barney of Proctor, Margaret "Peggy" (Gary) Petersen of Mesa, Ariz., Naomi (Gale) Hilman of Alberta, Canada, and Janet (John) Pelto of Esko; numerous nieces and nephews and many, many loving friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant sons, Randy and Roger; his stepmothers, Ailie and Hilda; a brother, William.
