Charles James Bollin was the son of Charles Adolphus Bollin who was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, and became a citizen of the United States in 1804. His mother was Eliza Wilhelmina Crovat born in Charleston, SC (1798-1858). Charles ‘ parents were travelling abroad when he was born in Marseilles, France, in July 1821. His father died of pneumonia one month after his birth in Marseilles, and he and his mother returned to the United States in August 1822. Charles married Emily Mary Passailaigue of Charleston, SC, on January 23, 1846, by Reverend P M Lynch. After their marriage, they moved to Columbia, and Charles served as agent at the Columbia Depot for the South Carolina Railroad. Charles and Emily had four children—Selina Emily, Poline Eliza (Lily), John Hodge and Charles Adolph. After the death of Emily, Charles married Mary Catherine Montague. They had four children—Eustace, Agnes, Eddie, and Ellen. In June 1870, Charles resigned his position with the SCRR. For more than a quarter of a century, he had served as agent at the South Carolina depot. His health had declined for several years.
