Emily Mary (Emilie Marie in French) was born in Charleston, SC. Her family came from Bordeaux, France, and for a generation or so were planters in Santo Domingo. Passailaigue, originally spelled “Passe l’eau signifies proprietor of a ferry boat who provided transportation across the Garonne and the Dordogne Rivers in France (over the water). Emily married Charles James Bollin on January 29, 1846, by Reverend P M Lynch. They had four children – Selina Emily, Poline Eliza (Lily), John Hodge and Charles Adolph. Emily died on her 29th birthday at Chick Springs, South Carolina. Emily may have died from consumption (tuberculosis) as many people at this time suffered with TB with no real hope of a cure. Chick Springs, SC, is located near Taylors, SC, and was known for its healing mineral springs containing iron and sulfur. Her portrait painted by William Harrison Scarborough is at the South Caroliniana Library. The portrait was rescued from the family home during the burning of Columbia in February 1865 and spent the night in the churchyard of St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
