Served as Capt. Co. E. 9th Kentucky Cavalry, CSA
Confederate spy during American Civil War.
Participated in Brig. Gen. John Hunt Morgan's Raid
Imprisoned with Morgan in Ohio State Penitentiary
escaped and recaptured by Union troops in TN.
Led the Northwest Conspiracy in 1864 and escaped
to Chicago in a mattress. Tried to free Confederate
prisoners of war by recruiting former members of Morgan's
Raiders who had escaped to Canada.
After the war he was a member of the Kentucky Court of
Appeals from 1878-1898
His home in Warren County is on the National Register
of Historic Places
His wife: Nancy Sproule, daughter of Captain Sproule
