Harvey J. Totten, known as a boy as James H. Totten, was born in Lima, Livingston County, New York in 1853. He was the oldest child of William M. and Catherine (Morley) Totten who moved from Lima to Wayland before William enlisted in the Union army.
James H. Totten was first married to Eugenia D. (Jennie) Kershner. Per census records, she was a daughter of Henry and Harriet Kershner of Dansville. Mr. Totten and Jennie had two children - a daughter Frances and son Charles. About 1892, James H. married Polly Judd and moved to Hornell. With Polly, he had two daughters, Myrtle and Eva, and a son, George. The family lived in Hornell and then Perry, New York. An obituary for Mr. Totten reported that he was buried in Hornell and that he was survived by his wife Polly Elizabeth and five children – Charles of Hornell; Mrs. Sam [Frances] Judd of Kane, Pa; and George, Mrs. Leslie [Myrtle] Kemp, and Mrs. Jack [Eva] Cooper, all of Perry. Also two brothers, Fred and Murray of Wayland. Mr. Totten’s burial in Rural Cemetery was recorded by the Painted Hills Genealogical Society.
