In 1882, Josiah Moulton founded the Moulton Hill Winery on land south of Cloverdale, Sonoma County, California, previously planted to vineyard with partner and brother-in-law, Joseph A.Carrie, a Cloverdale merchant.

On Sunday, March 28, 1886, Josiah W. Moulton, Sr. died of Tubercular Laryngitis in San Francisco, California. On Tuesday, March 30, 1886, he was buried in Masonic Cemetery (defunct), San Francisco, California. See the memorial to Josiah W.
