After attending elementary and junior high schools in Billings and Bozeman, he graduated from Billings Central High School in 1955, and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. After completion of his basic and technical training, Tom was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif. He was later transferred to Headquarters Company, Marine Air Group 13, 1st Marine Brigade, Fleet Marine Force Pacific. After completion of his enlistment, he returned to the United States and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant.
Thomas returned to Montana, where he met and married Bonnie Jean Miller and had three children. Tom and Bonnie later divorced. Tom worked in the banking industry and owned and operated numerous businesses in Helena and Billings over his life. He was also very active in the Helena Exchange Club and other charitable organizations.
Tom is survived by his daughter Kirsten Kirwin of Silverdale, Wash.; sons Chief Master Sergeant Craig M. Kirwin, USAF (Ret) of Billings, and Kevin (Kris) Kirwin of Billings. He is also survived by grandchildren Mandi (Josh) Clark, Levi Reed of Silverdale, Wash., Colton and Payton Kirwin of Billings, and great- grandsons Landon and Lauric Clark of Silverdale, Wash. He is also survived by his sister Patricia Danner of Antioch, Calif., and numerous nieces and nephews.
We would like to send special thanks to the Veterans Administration for their exceptional care of Tom and to the nurses and staff of the Billings Riverstone Hospice Home for their amazing caring and devotion to him over his final days.
Graveside inurnment with military honors will be at 2 p.m., June 17, at Yellowstone National Cemetery in Laurel.
