Rex D. Garrett, age 80, of Flora, Illinois, passed away early Saturday morning, May 28, 2016, at Flora Gardens Care Center in Flora.

Rex was born in Clay County, Illinois, on November 18, 1935, the son of Thelmon Vernon and Retha M. (Bay) Garrett. In 1966 he was united in marriage to Lou E. (McKnight) Gill, and they shared many years together until the time she passed away on July 15, 2012.

Rex was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving at a post in Germany. He worked for over 30 years for the Flora Post Office. He was knowledgeable in coin collecting and valuation, enjoyed metal detecting, and was a fan of St. Louis Cardinal Baseball. During his working years he would spend much of his spare time painting houses and helping others with a variety of handyman tasks. Rex is missed as part of his group at Duke's Drive-In, where you could count on finding him twice daily. He had been a member of the Clay City American Legion and Flora VFW.

He is survived by four daughters: Deeann Christopher of Florida, Stacy (husband Grant) Bowser of Ohio, Angela Garrett of Flora, and Shirley (husband Jack) Anderson of Xenia; grandchildren: Amanda Adams of Florida and her daughter—Isabella, Jenna (husband Christian) Raber of Florida, Stacy (husband Darrell) Smith of Xenia and their sons—Seth and Grant, and Anthony (wife Kim) Anderson of Iola and their son and daughter—Jonathan and Miranda; a special friend: Bonnie Blair of Flora; and his "best buddy": Sugar.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Lou, four brothers: Gene, Eldon "Buster", Robert, and Billy; and a granddaughter.

A graveside service with military honors for Rex Garrett will begin 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at Elmwood Cemetery in Flora.
